Carbohydrate Metabolism Assays

Carbohydrate metabolism plays an important role in many disease states such as diabetes, obesity, and galactosemia. Sensitive detection of carbohydrates is important for metabolic studies. Over 100 colorimetric or fluorometric assay kits are now available for measurement of various carbohydrates including monosacccharides (glucose, galactose, fructose), disaccharides (sucrose, maltose, lactose), and polysaccharides (starch, glycogen). The assays can also measure related metabolic molecules like lactate, pyruvate, citrate, choline, NAD(P)/NAD(P)H, creatinine, ?-hydroxybutyrate, fatty acid, and uric acid. These assay kits can be used in either 96- or 384-well plate formats.
