BioImage has been granted US Patent 6,780,599 that covers assays employing fusion proteins with GFP fragments (split-GFP) for the detection of protein:protein interactions. Traditionally, drug discovery has focused on identifying small molecule drugs that work by inhibiting single protein targets. Currently small molecules that interfere with critical protein:protein intracellular interactions are becoming increasingly important. Split-GFP will accelerate studies in this emerging field of drug discovery. Bio-PR

Hydra Biosciences announced today that it signed an agreement with Evotec OAI to advance the discovery of novel ion channel modulators. Under the terms of the agreement, Evotec OAI will provide Hydra with a range of biology and screening services to identify novel active compounds against a proprietary ion channel target being developed by Hydra. Using its proprietary high-throughput screening technology, Evotec OAI will produce reagents, develop assays and screen compounds as well as characterize hits generated by the program. 4SC, a German drug discovery and development company and Mutabilis, a French biotech company, focusing on the discovery of new therapeutic approaches for controlling nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections, announced today the signing of a research partnership. This partnership aims to identify new molecules as a basis for drug
discovery against an undisclosed target provided by Mutabilis. 4SC will use its proprietary virtual High Throughput Screening technology 4Scan(R) to screen a database of 4.6 million small organic molecules in order to identify new active compounds, that bind to the specific target. Mut-PR 9/21/04

Tecan and Invitrogen have announced an agreement to promote the use of Invitrogen's research kits on Tecan's instruments for a wide variety of key biological science and drug discovery applications. Under the non-exclusive open collaboration agreement, Tecan and Invitrogen will collaborate in the development of applications that combine the use of Invitrogen's products with Tecan's Freedom EVO® series of automated platforms, multimode detection devices and microarray systems for a range of life science applications, including nucleic acid sample preparation, microarray applications and cell-based assays. Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Aphoenix, Inc., have entered into a three-year drug discovery collaboration. Anadys is to utilize its drug discovery capabilities to discover and advance lead compounds against Aphoenix targets in multiple therapeutic indications. Aphoenix has already established early stage drug discovery programs in respiratory and anti-inflammatory diseases. Anad-PR 9/12/04

Researchers using the Odyssey® Infrared Imaging System from LI-COR® Biosciences have developed a new assay termed ‘On-Cell Westerns (OCW)’ using infrared labeled antibodies directed against extracellular epitopes to detect the internalization and recycling of GPCRs. James Wager Miller, a research scientist at the University of Washington, reports that the OCW assay can reliably detect the loss of receptors from cell surfaces following agonist treatment.
