Amgen will acquire by the second half of the year the remaining shares of Tularik that it does not already own for $1.3 billion in an all-stock deal. This will give the world's largest biotechnology company access to technology meant to treat cancer and other diseases by regulating genes. Amgen last year had acquired 21.3 percent of Tularik's shares as part of a collaboration to develop new cancer drugs. PR-Amgen 3/29/04

Evotec OAI a leading partner for integrated high-value-added drug discovery and development solutions to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and Panacos Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biotechnology company developing novel antiviral drugs for the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and other major viral diseases, announced that they have entered into a medicinal chemistry collaboration. Panacos will take advantage of Evotec OAI's full range of state-of-the-art medicinal chemistry capabilities to identify drug candidates for the treatment of HIV infection. PR-Evotec 3/25/04

Beckman Coulter has introduced two new laboratory automation workstations, the Biomek® 3000 and the Biomek® NX.  Designed for solution-focused life science and clinical research markets, the flexible new platforms extend the company’s ability to address applications requiring low- to mid-range throughput capabilities. The Biomek 3000 is best suited for academic and forensic laboratories, while the NX workstation is ideally suited for biotech, pharmaceutical, and specialty testing and molecular pathology laboratories conducting research for drug discovery and development.  Both new systems provide a smaller footprint than Beckman Coulter’s sophisticated, high-throughput Biomek FX liquid handling system. PR-B/C 3/24/04

Fisher Scientific and Apogent Technologies announced a definitive merger agreement to combine the two companies. This strategic combination significantly bolsters Fisher's proprietary-product portfolio and provides the company with a $1.1 billion footprint in the high-growth life-science market. The combination strengthens Fisher's position in biopharma-production and diagnostic-reagents and enhance Fisher's existing worldwide distribution and supply network. PR-Fisher 3/17/04

A collaboration recently announced between CytRx and the U of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and Dharmacon aims to enhance and accelerate the work being done under CytRx's sponsored research at the school. CytRx announced, in 2003, the formation of a strategic alliance with UMMS and sponsored research with Michael Czech, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Molecular Medicine to use RNA interference technologies in the development of lead drug compounds for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. PR-CytRx 3/11/04

Argenta Discovery has announced that it has entered into a three-year collaboration with AstraZeneca and will provide discovery research capabilities. The first project using Argenta's medicinal chemistry, biology and analytical services is for the Respiratory and Inflammation Disease group, based in Lund, Sweden, Loughborough and Alderley Park UK. PR-Argenta 3/8/04

DiscoveRx Corporation has announced the availability of a range of kinase assay toolboxes to its expanding line of assays for high throughput screening. The ready-to-use toolboxes cover a broad range of kinase targets based on fluorescence polarization, but give the customers the flexibility to optimize the buffer conditions and assay parameters as required by their target. PR-DiscoveRx  3/1/04

Endo Pharmaceuticals announced that it has entered into a license agreement with MakScientific which is developing technologies originally developed by AlexiPharma and the University of Connecticut. Under the agreement, MakScientific has granted Endo exclusive, worldwide rights to jointly develop and commercialize MakScientific's entire existing and future preclinical library of compounds with selective CB2 (cannabinoid receptor) agonist activity in the fields of pain and selected central nervous system (CNS) disorders.
