Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co and Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd announced that they have reached a basic agreement to merge on April 1, 2005. The newly combined company is expected to gain a highly competitive edge in the global pharmaceutical market and will aim at developing into a global player. Pooled
resources will rank the new company 17th in the global pharmaceutical market with sales of approximately 800 billion yen.

Merck & Co.,one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical companies, and Aton Pharma, a privately held company focusing on development of novel treatments for cancer and other serious diseases, announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Merck will acquire Aton. Under the terms of the agreement, Merck will acquire 100 percent of the equity of Aton and Aton will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck.

This agreement follows another research agreement that resulted in the identification of an optimized lead currently under development for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Evotec OAI , a partner for integrated high-value-added drug discovery to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and Toray Industries, announced a screening and medicinal chemistry collaboration to identify drug candidates interacting with one of the drug targets discovered in the genomic novel drug discovery project in Toray. Evotec OAI will use its state-of-the-art computational chemistry platform to virtually screen its database of over 3 million compounds to identify structures that are predicted to interact with the target.
